How to Make Iced Coffee at Home

If you are a fan of chilled coffee drinks in the warmer months, or just want to switch up your mid-morning or midday caffeine hit, iced coffee could be for you.

High street coffee shops have ushered in a huge array of iced coffee drinks over recent years, with frappes and frappuccinos proving hugely popular. The actual coffee content in many of these is debatable – most are comprised of sugar, milk, cream and various synthetic flavourings.

Don’t confuse iced coffee with cold brew coffee – the two are different, and we’ve shared our thoughts on making cold brew coffee here.

Here at Capital Coffee, we think our coffee is too good to mask with too many additional flavours, and we haven’t got the kit at home to add too many bells and whistles to our iced coffees, so our recipe for iced coffee is on the simpler side.

  1. Start by making a cup (or pot) of black coffee with your preferred method – maybe a filter, cafetiere or Aeropress.
  2. Let it cool to room temperature (putting it into a cold jug or container will speed this up) and then chill further in the fridge.
  3. When you are ready to drink your iced coffee, fill a glass up to the top with large cubes of ice.
  4. Pour your black coffee over the ice, almost to the top.
  5. Top up with milk, enjoying the marbling effect of the coffee, ice and milk in your glass. You can then stir with a long spoon to your preference (cocktail spoons are good for this!)
  6. Sit back and enjoy your iced coffee!

We often make a pot of coffee and keep in the fridge for a few days, meaning regular iced coffee in seconds, whenever we want it.

Some twists:

  • Our coffee is smooth enough to drink without any added sugar, and the milk will make it sweeter still, but to add some more caramelly sweetness, try a drop of maple syrup.
  • Add a dash of double cream or more milk if you prefer a richer, creamier drink.
  • Infuse your milk with cinnamon or nutmeg before adding to your coffee for a slightly spiced flavour.
  • If you have a powerful blender, chuck your coffee and ice in and add ice-cream (vanilla works well, but salted caramel or even chocolate are pretty special) for a milkshake version of iced coffee.
  • Bring out your inner child and top your iced coffee with squirty cream.
